1924-2010

Alexander 'Alex' Abraham
Alexander 'Alex' Abraham
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alex Abraham of 3 David St., River Ryan, who left this world peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.

Alex was born in Inverness on Feb. 16, 1924, and was the son of the late Mustafa and Mary (MacDonald) Abraham.

Alex was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford. He was a coal miner for 48 years, working in Nos. 18, 20 and 12 and then retiring from Lingan. He loved horses and he and Sarah could always be seen at Tartan Downs every week. He had his first horse in 1967 by the name of Centennial Prince, but his most favourite was ‘Lingan Erin’. Alex loved his yearly trip to his hometown, Inverness, to race the horse and visit his brother Alex Joe MacDonald. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be missed by all who loved him.

Besides his parents, Alex was predeceased by his loving wife of 53 years, Sarah, brothers, Alex Joe, Buddy, stepbrother, Murray, sisters, Laura, Lila, Ella and stepsister, Sue.

Alex is survived by his children, Lila (Rod), Halifax; sons, Joey (Judy), George (Cindy), Michael (Rose), all of New Waterford; five grandchildren, Gina, Leanne, David, Nicholas and Kevin; two great-grandchildren, Devon and David. He is also survived by brother, Sam (Elaine) and two sisters, Annie Mae and Isabel. He will also be deeply missed by his friend and close companion, Beryl MacKay. They enjoyed weekly card games, dinners and going to the Savoy.

There will be no visitation as per his request. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 28 at Calvin United Church with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown, with a luncheon to follow at Calvin Hall. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvin United Church. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.

‘Cry, then pick yourself up bravely,
Because they’re watching over us
And hoping we’ll do well during
the rest of our years here,
fulfilling whatever destiny we have.’
