Donkin, N.S.

Martha E. MacMullen passed peacefully on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Donkin, Martha was the daughter of the late John H. and Jane G. (Ley) MacPherson.

A retired school teacher, Martha taught for years in Donkin and eventually became a reading supervisor for the county of Cape Breton. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Church in Donkin, loved to oil paint, garden and do needlework and was a member of Jubilee Rebekah Lodge #14. She enjoyed skating, bowling, was an avid swimmer and was most content during her summers ‘on the Mira’. Mom loved her family and was devoted to giving Dad the best of care and worked hard to give her family the best life possible. She and Dad cherished their friends and many fond memories were made over gatherings of music and fun at their home in Donkin or along the Mira River.

Martha is survived by a daughter, Jacalyn (Lawrence) Robertson, Sydney and a son, David (Darlene), Calgary. ‘Gran’ leaves four adoring grandchildren - Brett and Kathleen Robertson and Aron and Matthew MacMullen. Also surviving are a sister, Lillian Walls Moquet, brother Carl Ley, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Margaret MacDonald, Gerald and Catherine Ryan, Donald MacMullin, Alfred and Eileen MacMullin and Bernadette MacMullin, Monica (MacPherson) McKend, Joan MacPherson and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Martha’s life will take place on Saturday, July 24th, 2010 at 11 a.m. in St. Luke's United Church, Donkin with Rev. Chris Matheson officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Donations in Martha’s name can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Diabetes Association, Heart and Stroke or a charity of one’s choice.
